We were traveling from bay area to this weekend and both on the way and in LA struggled tofind any hotels. We called about 30-40 hotels and by luck eventually found one. When staying in LA I could not find anything near shores we have to search around Lancaster to find something there. That made us wonder what is going on I know it is peak travel season but even though shortage of available places seem so severe or some type of special event taking place around this area??

Crossfit games in Carson. It also had a beach event. But no way it'd fill all LA hotel, but probably all South Bay beach ones.

Couldnt you easily find vacancies on Hotels.com, Expedia, or other similar sites without having to call them? No special large event in the LA area. There is a surfing event in Orange County.

Why are you surprised? This has always been one of the busiest travel weekends of the year which is why people were questioning the timing of the Century Crunch.

"Why are you surprised? This has always been one of the busiest travel weekends of the year"

why is July 26/27 one of the busiest travel weekends?

Is it Thanksgiving?
is it Christmas?
is it memorial day?
is it labor day?
is it independence day?
is it any holiday?

I really don't understand.

Typical summer season. LA is an extremely popular destination.

Maybe spend a couple of day in sd and a couple in Hollywood.

There wasn't anything big like the Rose Bowl, LA Marathon, or championship game this weekend. My guess is everyone is looking for a budget hotel.
