This Sunday my family and I will be flying into LAX early Sunday Morning to later catch a connecting flight to Sydney. Our flight should arrive a little before 10am and our flight to Sydney is at 10pm that night. I have been to the L.A. area a couple of times in the past. I guess we mostly did the touristy stuff as in Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Studio city(Rodeo drive, Hollywood Blvd, etc).
Briefly drove downtown LA as well (about 5yrs ago). On another occasion we stayed in the Orange County area a couple of days.

So with that said what is something that we can feasibly do in 8-10hrs? I just don't want to sit in the airport for that amount of time, especially since we will have another 12-13hr to SYD. I will have a car and the only "must do" is I have to take my dad to "In-and-Out" for his first experience. Other than that we will just be killing time. Maybe we can get an hour or 2 of Beach time. Thanks for any suggestions.

There's a big In N Out just north of LAX. Then head south on Sepulveda and you can explore Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo beaches. Downtown Manhattan Beach has a nice section of shopping, restaurants and the pier. You can rent bikes in town by the hour also.

Thanks guys, both are great suggestions. I didn't realize the space shuttle was there....just looked it up, seems interesting. I've heard good things about Manhattan Beach, but never thought about it in this circumstance. Thanks for that and that sounds like something everyone would enjoy.

Different question- At what point would you guys suggests heading back to LAX? I know Sunday nights at ATL tends to slow down, but I am not sure that’s the case at LAX. I was thinking heading back around 6:30-7pm being it’s an international flight. However I am not accounting for traffic conditions. Should I head back earlier or should things be pretty chill on a Sunday?

I'd go to Venice Beach and Santa Monica. Both are close to the airport.

No day is "chill" here anymore. But if you head back by 6pm you should be fine unless there's a zombie apocalypse.

Coming back from SM on the freeways can be unpredictable/slow. I don't know your car situation, but rentals are at least 15 minutes away from the airport, plan accordingly.

I'll second Howiester's recommendation of Venice Beach and Santa Monica. I just wish I could recommend a safe place to leave your car. (Perhaps someone else can.)

The Third Street Promenade is a nice stroll in Santa Monica. Welcome | Downtown Santa Monica From there, you can head to the Santa Monica pier, and southeast toward Venice Beach. How much you'll take in will depend on when you get out of the airport, how much strolling time you have.

There is plenty of public parking around 3rd street. I've parked there many times with no issues.

Thanks again guys. I am thinking Santa Monica and Venice will be the easiest. Yes it will be a rental from Thrifty (unbelievably cheap) and I think I remember LAX having off site rental facilities. I'll keep everything you guys stated in regards to traffic in mind. Probably will use Waze.....seems to be very reliable. When you say safe do you mean as cars being broken into or just safe in regards to finding easy parking?
