I know the southern-most boundary of the greater metro area is camp pendleton, but what about the western and northern (I'm guessing thousand oaks, or somewhere between there and Oxnard) boundaries? I don't mean LA city limits, but more like when you're not considered "in" LA, or when working in LA is too much of a commute...

LA is a huge place. You can be within LA city limits and still be WAY too far away from another part of LA city to consider it commutable. When I drive up the 101, I believe its the Conejo grade that makes me feel like I've left LA. I think its between Newbury Park and Camarillo. On the north, even Santa Clarita is still basically LA, but you don't want to commute from there to downdown. On the east, I'd use the 57 freeway as a border, but nothing really changes there. There's not really a simple answer and I doubt any two people will agree on the borders.
