I will also agree depending on where you live. I have lived here in El Sereno for 20 years and never had a problem. But it all depends where u live. The bad parts are Lock St, Lowell, Ithica and Guardia St, Navarro St. That's where all the gangs are and lots of car jacking so be carefull. Monterey hills are nice, as well as the houses by Wilson High and the borderline of Alhambra and El Sereno.

How is cyril Ave at eastern Ave In El Sereno? I just moved from Central California and I found a room for rent in that area. I'm currently located in Monterey Park. Does anyone have recommendations on where to stay? I will be attending PCC next month.

Default El Sereno, California

El Sereno? It's bad.

El Sereno is pretty bad. There are a lot of Mexicans there and they don't like other races live there. It is pretty dangerous. Gun shots every weekend etc. A lot of gangs. They don't leave people alone. They like to scare people etc. make threats, startle people, control people, keep people from sleeping, torment and harass. I hate it. Some areas of El Sereno are nice. I hate just living there. El Sereno is depressing. All Mexican. Just a few houses have other races living in them and the Mexicans don't like it. If you are Mexican it might be ok for you.

Good Luck!

Depends. I read in the LA Times today about a lady found dead in her home, 3700 block of Collis (which abuts South Pas and is a pretty nice area). Sounds like a botched burglary. Ironically, I was driving down Huntington the other day and noticed some nice new restaurants from Main (Alhambra) all the way to Eastern. The area up by Charlie's Trio is very nice (Berkshire). My wife and I were looking to lease a place up there at one time.

And if one equates depression with 'Mexicans', well, you probably shouldn't be living in El Puelbo de la Reina de Los Angeles in the first place.

As long as you dont live on locke ave or anywhere near edison, the rest of El Sereno is nice. I would recommend looking up places near or inside Alhambra. Try South Pasadena, thats a very nice area. Collis street is a very nice neighbor hood, there are some nice apartments going up Collis on the hill...you should try looking up those apartments, i've taken walks up there many times and its gated. The majority of gang members live on locke or near the street itself, and for those that are familiar with the gang itself...the infamous ESR. I know alot of those gangsters, grew up with them and went to school with them. Got out and moved out in time, I used to live on Locke ave...sleepless nights. Saw many class mates and friends die while attending Wilson High School by rival gangs.

I'm thinking of buying a house up in the Monterey hills above Monterey Road & Huntington Drive. Though I'm reading its a nice area, still I have to drive down to Huntington to work, etc. just want to know if I have to worry about gang areas below the hills. Does anyone know that area well?

I just want Huntington Ave to be given the attention that York Blvd is currently getting..El Sereno welcomes artists and Studio peeps don't just stay in Highland Park come on over and take a chance. There are some great homes 1 mile West of Fremont Ave..

Even though the area may seem nice you have to be careful. I had family that lived on the border in Alhambra.

One of them had a gun pulled out on them and another assaulted by gang members while walking home. There are gangs and crime at night, especially on the weekends.

I agree with another poster that it is not the safest area to raise a family. That is unless you want your kids to deal with bullying and street life.
