For the OP I wouldn't recommend either santa monica or weho. she sounds a little alternative and artsy and might prefer silver lake, venice, los feliz, central hollywood. but where does she work? that answers the question of where to live.

Ahh!!! Very helpful and informational, I will definitely be looking into those areas. I'm a student, but I also work for my families Aerospace company in another state (Nevada). So I fly out of town a lot.

Out of your two selections I'd go for Weho. Though I live in Weho so I'm biased.
But as someone in your age group my only complaint about Weho is meeting people close to my age I find very few early 20's peeps in Weho. Most of the ones I meet and befriend live in Hollywood, Mid City or Noho. I assume due to cost. If this is not of concern to you then Weho! Beware that its usually 45-1hr to get to LAX, since you fly in and out frequently.

Getting to LAX takes me 30 minutes max. La Cienega all the way down to Century (dislike Tijera). Avoid rush hour scheduled flights.

30 minutes max? At 4 am? Usual traffic from WeHo to LAX via La Cienega, even in light traffic, is at least 45 minutes.

if you're under 25 forget SM... the vast majority of apartment dwellers who can afford $2k+ rents are older professionals, industry types, or well-paid tech execs. The restaurant & bar scene are really tame compared to Downtown or Hollywood. And if you're not LGBT, forget West Hollywood. My friend's sister who's in her mid 20's was discouraged how few straight professional males there were just out & about. Even the "hunky" macho guys she'd chat up at Robek's or Coffee Bean turned out to be gay.

I'm 21, female, single, no children, very active, student, and outdoorsy. I like to go out for drinks, music festivals, take pictures, farmers markets, alternative entertainment type stuff, and exploring new foods (eating out ha ha).

My school/work hours are flexible, I'm not too worried about traffic. I'm currently paying around $2200 monthly for a one bedroom apartment here w utilities...OR thinking my max for a house/apartment/condo will be around $350,000. It's important I live in a safe area because I'll be alone. Is this realistic?

Questions:

1. Which would you recommend given my demographics and interests?
2. If so, are there any specific areas?
3. Any tips, comments, etc?

Thank you,

Lana
I guess I'm more curious than anything. What is your profession that at age 21 you can afford $2200 a month in rent on your own? And you're a student? Do your parents pay for everything?

I had the same question until I saw what she said below.

This is silly. WeHo has a large LGBT population but it's not the majority and WeHo doesn't exist in a bubble. People come to WeHo from all over the city. It's a central location with tons of stuff to do. Most of the bars aren't even LGBT bars.

If you're willing to put up with a higher than average amount of douchebros, go with WeHo. It attracts a younger crowd, and it's close to Hollywood, which does the same. Santa Monica's neighbors are West LA and Venice (Bay Area Lite), both which are comparatively less energetic for a young person.
