My family is moving to South LA in January, my dad is a chef and got a job offer from a mexican restaurant there. I'm 17, finishing HS, from Kansas City Missouri. I've never been to Los Angeles, but I always wanted to live there someday... But I've heard bad things about South LA. People talk about the crime, drugs, illegal immigrants and poverty... Is it really that bad as people say? What's living there like?

Depends on the specific area. The gangs have been getting forced into smaller and smaller areas for 20+ years so the high-crime areas are more like high-crime pockets. South LA has more crime than the rest of LA but it's not a warzone or as bad as it was in the early 90's.

Depends where... The farther east and south it goes the "worse" it gets. As a general rule as long as you stay north of say slauson then you'll be good. What neighborhood in South LA will you be staying?

We will be staying there temporarily. 1 or 2 years maximum, till we find a better place to live. We are going there because it's close to my father's job and it's the cheapest ren we found in the area. He is working at Taco Bell (12800 Figueroa St.)

The "Mexican restaurant" is Taco Bell? Interesting that your family is moving all the way from Missouri for Taco Bell. I hope that didn't come off cruel or insensitive in any way.

As stated already, it depends on how deep into South Central you go.
