Sorry to interrupt this forum with tourist questions but I'm hoping people with a better knowledge of the area will be able to help please? I haven't been to California since 1991 and 1985 prior to that, this time I'm coming back with my wife and two teenagers as well as another family. My dilemma is should i stay in Marina del Ray, it seems quieter, perhaps a better family location, or Santa Monica (my preference of Venice was brutally dismissed by my wife etc). Any pros and cons either way would be appreciated. Either way, I can't wait to get back!

I wrote a post and just realized you're a tourist, not moving here. If you're a tourist stay in Santa Monica. Much more to do and more centrally located to everything.

The marina is nice, but SM is much better for situation in my opinion.

Santa Monica, unless you really like looking at sailboats.

Santa Monica is probably better from a tourist standpoint.

Also, you might want to check VRBO.com for vacation rentals. Might suit the group better.

I regularly vacation in Venice Beach, so I hang out in both Marina Del Rey and Santa Monica (this is why I LOVE that entire area).

But for the OPs situation, definitely Santa Monica, there is so much more to do there for a family. But do venture over to Marina Del Rey to check it out.

Amen! That's my plan, MDR for home consideration, with SM as a backup.

Santa Monica in general is more desirable than Marina Del Rey, but it really depends on the specific area. MDR has nice expensive homes too. There's parts of SM as you move South and South / East that get kind of crappy. The Northern part of Santa Monica as you get up around Montana Ave is nice. I agree that Venice is a bit of a dump, although Lindsay Lohan lives not too far from the Venice Post Office.
Your wife is right about Venice. Lots of homeless and lots of crime...

marina del rey is better to me than santa monica...its less congested and there's more of a natural scene to it...it has nice shopping as well and many nice restaurants....love marina del rey....would live there in a heartbeat...and to me, its more centrally located....closer to LAX and the south bay
