looking for input on moving to a city near LA-OC boarder. looking for a nice, safe, family neighborhood with good schools for our 3 daughters. commutes are to El Segundo and Orange (22 and i5)

Cities we're considering:
Cerritos, La Palma, Cypress, and "good parts" of Buena Park, Long Beach, and Lakewood. also like La Mirada and Sunny Hills area of Fullerton - $550K~$650K budget

Thanks!

I can strongly recommend La Mirada. Good schools up and down, K-12, epic parks and excellent city resources. Very kid friendly. (Stay East of Valley View.) I think the other cities you named will have a wider variance in school quality than LM. The ride to El Segundo will probably be via the 105 and to Orange, South on the 5. Both ways about 40 to 60 minutes with traffic.

Housing in all of the 'good parts' you mentioned will be pretty comparable in sq ft and the size of the lots except Sunny Hills which will be a little pricer. Most were built post WW2 with some older properties in Long Beach.

Cerritos school district is top-notch, and the city itself is very nice; it's very Irvine-like, in that it has a green, park-like atmosphere with many trees and urban parks. Whitney High School is one of the top schools in the nation.
Nearby La Palma is very nice as well; it's a very small, well-run city. Cerritos and La Palma have no bad areas.

Cerritos is mostly Filipino and Korean; La Palma has more Whites.

La Mirada would give you relatively easy access to the green line, which goes to el segundo and would allow you to avoid the atrocious 105 freeway. orange would be a straight shot down the 5.

Seal Beach is another good option: great schools and easy access to 405/22/605 freeways.

Are their homes in Seal Beach for under $700K? College Park E? Maybe should be thinking about Los Alamitos too. Good School District there as well.

I'm sure you can find homes in SB for less than that. Seal Beach has a wide variety of housing options, but the homes closest to the beach are more expensive overall. But the neighborhoods north of PCH ( around 5th St. and Bolsa St. and over towards Seal Beach Blvd.) has a lot of options.

Rossmoor is nice but expensive. Los Alamitos is nice as well.

Cypress has older neighborhoods that have some 'iffy' looking people, but overall Cypress is solid.

With Cerritos & Long Beach I choose location carefully. Some of the Cerritos schools are great, some pretty average.

I think the Sunny Hills area is the one you have to worry least about.

Did you check Whittier? Is that too far north? There are some great schools there and nice neighborhoods.
