I see a lot of demand for .net and LAMP developers so C# or PHP might be a good place to start. Ruby is also hot right now. Big data is also gaining popularity, so make sure you know at least one type of SQL.

Thanks, I will look more into Ruby, along with .net and I am not familiar with LAMP, I look into it. My friend suggested that I should start with C# also so I might just do that and start playing around with it.

Commit to something and do it well. Do something with a business purpose. To dabble is not enough. As far a finding a job in LA, it is easy to find a job you are overqualified for if you are willing to work for peanuts.
