Hi,

I have never taken the bus, but I need to help somebody figure out how to use it in the afternoon going from the City of Commerce to Duarte in the afternoons Monday through Friday. How do I go about doing this? Does anybody have a good link or experience with this. Also, this is a young woman so is it even safe for her to go alone in the early afternoon?

Thanks,

Would depend on where you are going in Commerce. If it is to the Citadel, then I used to ride a freeway bus to the northernmost corner and then walk to work on Washington and Eastern, which is about 1/2 mile. This was in 1991-1992 but this service probably exists. I recommend riding Foothill Transit or Metrolink from Duarte to Downtown LA, and then take a freeway bus to Commerce. If you are going to somewhere else in Commerce, it may be a very long ride.

After having tried a couple routes to shortcut southbound across East LA from either the El Monte Station or Cal State LA via Garvey and Atlantic (route 260), but the routing through LA was faster and the buses less crowded. Check metro.net for the last leg to Commerce, and for the initial leg from Duarte you may be able to use the light rail, or check foothilltransit.org

I made sure to get out of there before dark. I am male but did not look similar to the dominant population of the early 1990s.

There are not many buses around Duarte.
Google shows:
#264 Metro Bus which starts in Altadena- Pasadena Gold Line (Sierra Madre Villa Station) -Arcadia Santa Anita Mall -Duarte City of Hope.

#272 Foothill Transit Bus from Duarte loop - Baldwin Park Metrolink - West Covina

#187 Foothill Transit Bus from Duarte (Along Huntington Dr) - Sierra Madre Villa Station - Old Town Pasadena.

So I think your best and most frequent bet is #187 bus from Duarte to Sierra Madre Villa Station (40 minutes)
Gold Line Train from Sierra Madre Villa to Downtown or Boyle Heights or East LA (40 minutes) where there is probably buses to City of Commerce (I dont know which one). The 187 bus comes every 20 minutes and the Gold Line every 6-12 minutes. The other 2 buses come every hour non rush hour times.
