Hi, my wife and I will be moving to Santa Monica from out of state, and had to quickly secure a place to live. We ended up getting a place on 19th street between Pico Blvd and Delaware. Since signing the lease we've been reading online that this area may be particularly unsafe. Can anyone shed some light on this for us? My wife is in panic mode right now.

Thanks!

Just trying to get informed of what we've gotten ourselves into. Yes, it's a little late...

It's the least safe part of santa monica, but generally speaking still not bad at all. Just be vigilant.

It's the part of SM that makes you feel like you're in Panorama City, i.e., a dump.

Congratulate yourself. You managed to move to one of the wealthiest communities in the US, and then chose to live in its ghetto. That's really not a safe neighborhood at all. Lots of random shootings, etc. However, it is well-policed, largely because Santa Monica College is in that area. But we did have a gun massacre there 18 mos ago. Just sayin'.

You'll be fine. Obviously you chose SM because your job(s) are there and you didn't want to commute, so that's a positive.

Once you get settled in your new career(s) you can scout around for other place that will suit you and your budget. If you make enough you might be willing to break the lease or something, but odds are it won't be horrible for you.

Please... you all are being ridiculous. Panorama City? No... much safer and nicer, much more landscaped. Random shootings all the time? Almost never and just within gangs. The SMC shooter was some Middle Eastern disgruntled kid, that could have happened anywhere.

Should you take late night walks alone, no, but otherwise, it's so fine you'll be laughing.

Agreed ^. SM is an affluent (the further north you go the wealthier it gets), very safe city and a wonderful place to live with lots of fun things to do. The area you chose is not the best in SM, but you'll be fine.
