Trader Joe's always has great prices on nuts. I am an almond eater (unsalted variety) and believe the prices are around $6 for 16 oz at TJ's.

They are also GASSED as referenced in that article.

raw is better than processed,
but even 'raw' almonds are steam-pastuerized to comply with the salmonella rules.

Trader Joes works for most, but you should seek out an organic mail-order source if this is an issue which keeps you awake at night.

I don't even mind the steamed variety. But as you mention, "raw" would be better. One thing that puzzles me. Is there a noticeable taste difference between "steamed", "gassed" or "raw"? The Blue Diamond bag that I just bought are noticeably devoid of any flavor. Then come to find out, they are "gassed". American companies always cut corners for gullible Americans in their endless race to greater profit.

Do your own "Pepsi Challenge" taste-test.

look at the laws on imported nuts... almonds from Spain don't have to be pastuerized.
But the marcona almonds are more soft and smaller and chewy than the 'woodsy' california variety. They'll also run you closer to $16-18 per pound.

for me, I soak the trader joes almonds in some olive oil and rosemary, or blend some in my protein shake and call it a day.

Very unfortunate but also very true.
