Hello everybody!
I am from Austria (Europe), 26years old and I plan to move to LA in September. The only problem is that I can not really find out how to find a Job without being there ... I have tried to find Jobs in the Internet (craigslist...) but all of them expect you to have a Work Visa. But the problem is that I can´t apply for a Work Visa without a guaranteed Job. So it´s kind of like a never ending circle. I am also considering a internship but most of them are unpaid plus they expect also a certain degree what you can only get as a US citizen...
With my 3 Month tourist Visa I am not allowed to seek for jobs in the US.
I am a Camera Operator and Video Editor and of course it would be great to work in the Film Industrie. But in the beginning I would take any Job.
I appreciate every advice!
Thanx in advance,
Johannes

Hi Johannes,

US Department of Homeland Security

You need to go to that page and read the page titled Working in the U.S.

You'll need to be sponsored to work here.

All the H1b visas for 2015 are gone. They went the first week.

You can try for 2016. Opens in April: H1B Visa 2016

Sadly it's tough for ordinary working/middle class citizens of most developed countries to migrate from one to the other. It almost seems one has better chance if you can prove refugee status based on harassment or persecution in one's native country.

But still, good luck, you might be able to make it happen. Personally, I speak German and, were I differently situated, would gladly move to Vienna or Berlin, given the chance. But it's tough going the other way as well.

Don't limit your options to L.A. if you can avoid it. I've lived the majority of my life there, and I do like it in many ways, but there are aspects of life there that aren't so great. We recently moved down to San Diego North County and have never been happier with our living environment. If you're planning to work in the entertainment industry it might be harder not to live in L.A. At least you can Google around the city and see what appeals to you. In spite of the problems in some districts there are a lot of good reasons to be there. The "haters" on this website get pretty strident, so it's better do do your own research.

You may want to check out some of our local news sources on the Internet, as well. For a perspective that is less conservative than most American news stations, I recommend National Public Radio, and its local outlets. KCRW is the leading NPR affiliate in Southern California. Actually, KCRW isn't just news; they have a lot of music programming which is also pretty good. Most NPR affiliates are more focused on news and current affairs, though. These include KPBS (San Diego) and KPCC (Pasadena).

Thanx everybody for the helpful and unhelpful replies! I´ll try to get the H1B Visa for 2016. My girlfriend has family there. They are also helping us wherever they can. I am confident.
