LA seems to have lower quality transplants than comparable cities like Chicago and San Francisco which import an ivy league chic into it's cities. It's a great city in some ways, especially if you never have to go outside. If you bought a house in Los Feliz or Beverly Hills in 1995 for 700,000 LA is probably one of the best cities in America. If you are trying to buy into it now it's overpriced for it's urban amenities. The allure of LA is the freedom to pursue your dream, or park your Range Rover in a garage, have a back yard, but still be able to shop at the Prada store or a boutique in Echo Park. California in general is sliding into the abyss with it's lack of quality public schools in many areas, but LA is still a decent city in it's own apocalyptic chic way.
Sounds to me like you're one of them poor lower class L.A. residents who can't enjoy Los Angeles like some of us can. Then again, you dont have to be upper or middle class to enjoy Los Angeles. People need to start blaming their problems to where they live just to feel better about their own situation.

SurekRZA; how can you even make that assumption based on someone's opinion of L.A.. Lower class my ass. Your a fool. This is a public forum, and some people like L.A. and some don't. I bet you actually think most of the U.S. views L.A. as a fine city. That's just not the case, and this informs me you live in a bubble. My opinion, can you handle that, is that L.A. is not a beautiful city. The weather is great though...

Do you ever wonder why every other person writes negative comments about L.A. on this forum. Maybe some are whiners, but there is some truth to it. Sorry dude, this ain't no NYC or San Fran. There's no Golden Gate or Empire State building, and there definitely isn't "city" culture. The history of L.A. and culture of L.A. is Snoop Dog and Britney Spears. Nice...

Guy, Ive been on this forum since last year. You come in here talking all kinds of nonesense and complaints without reading anything about the history of Los Angeles. You sound like a teenager with a lot of spare time who doesnt have anything else to do but just post threads on this forum.
"My opinion, can you handle that, is that L.A. is not a beautiful city"??
who do you think you are? Watch out, Steveorilla is stating his opinions.
Golden Gate Bridge, yeah thats pretty much sums it up for San Francisco.
The Empire State building? since when does ONE building make a city great?
Enough of you Stevorilla

Again, Ive been here for quite a while. Ive heard all kinds of complaints and negative comments about Los Angeles but it really doesnt bother me. People are entitled to their opinions.

I've lived in Orlando and I've lived in NYC. Apples to oranges dude... I know your looking for some rationalization to my comments, but sorry dude, it's an opinion and many many have the same opinion of this crappy city.
How long did you spend in each of those other cities? How long have you lived here?

Also, I'm not a "dude," dude.

Unlike most older Eastern cities or even San Francisco, LA just exploded in a massive growth right about the time the Interstate system was being built. LA grew around it's roads whereas most cities add roads as time passes. Yes there was very poor city planning but it's essentially an orange grove that grew to be one of the largest metro areas in the world in a very short amount of time. Wiki claims it's the second largest in the US while the government stats seem to indicate it's the largest. Either way, it's really big.

You're comparing LA to cities that grew over centuries while LA grew to eclipse all other cities in decades. LA is a bad place to be if you don't have a car for sure. LA is unique. You either love it or hate it. In some ways I really like LA but I didn't enjoy living there nearly as much as I enjoy visiting.

Ok.. getting back to the original question. Is L.A. zoned and planned poorly? The answer from a civil engineering standpoint is quite simply Yes. L.A. has a very weak public transportation system and the creation of one in the modern day is not worth the cost considering the low population density of L.A. The roads cannot withstand the traffic flow and because there is such a weak public transportation system, the problem gets worse every year.

The answer from a personal standpoint depends on who you are. Generally young people want to live in an urban city like New York, San Francisco or any European city... with apartment buildings and crowded streets. L.A. is much less urban, but it is still a city. It is more suited for older people who want to have a backyard and still earn city-job money. Yes you have to drive everywhere, but it is nice to have your own personal pool, be able to throw a barbecue in your backyard, and still have the museums and entertainment of a large urban city.

Granted I have only lived in New York and L.A., I always thought of L.A. as a suburb because it reminds me of New Jersey. I realize that most cities aren't as large as New York, but it is where I grew up and therefore the city I compare all others to. I feel like New York has more soul and romance. I was able to go everywhere without owning a car. L.A. definitely has better weather though. Like I said before, it all depends on the place you are in your life. If you want a metropolitan city with some soul and history move to New York. If you want warm weather, a backyard and things to do every weekend move to L.A. I am personally planning to move back to New York as soon as I can get a job there, but then again I am not married, have no kids and I miss New York.

There's a lot more to LA than warm weather and backyards.

LA has just as much, if not more, influence on the rest of the country as places like New York and Chicago.

It has its own unique culture.

And history? Uh....Hollywood?

LA has plenty of problems, but it continues to capture peoples imagination as it has for decades.

People need to stop trying to compare LA to San Francisco and Chicago. They need to stop thinking of it as being one big city; because it's not and if you actually read the history of LA, it never was. It's really numerous mid-sized cities and small towns that grew up together and eventually grew into each other. LA didn't "sprawl out" in all directions from one big downtown; cities like Long Beach and Pasadena grew as separate cities with their own downtowns. The same can be said for even places like Compton. Downtown LA has never really been the central alpha focal point of the metro area to the degree that downtown Chicago is.
