That is an Amazingly low rent for anywhere. I wonder when they started to pay less them the going rate for a 3 bedroom house in LA. I hope they do land on their feet but just one more reason I am selling instead of renting out. If I ever want to sell I wouldnt want this big problem.

31 years in one place is a lot longer than average. I suspect were it not for rent control they would have moved decades ago and wouldn't be complaining now. People get used to being subsidized and rent control is double edged sword for renters. Yeah, it keeps rent low but it also traps you and prevents you from going out and finding a better life, somewhere else, where you can stand on your own. Ideally the adult daughter and granddaughter would be on their own but cheap rent keeps them there.

At this point they are squatters, plain and simple. Everyone faces hardship at one time or another. I don't get people like this. Do they think they are entitled to live anywhere they want? It looks like the area has been getting fixed up for quite a while. What were they going to demand next, that the house be remodeled to match the other million dollar homes while still paying 9 and change for rent? Ridiculous.

I'll bet they have a laundry list of using tax payer funds.

I know an older couple who still pay about $800 a month for a 900sq/ft 2-bedroom apartment unit in LA proper. They have been living there for two-three decades now.

At the end of the day, they are still renting, and things can change very quickly.

Had they saved up a bit to buy back in the day, they would have their own home with crazy high property value... and something substantial to pass on to their children and grandchildren when they are gone.

Who doesn't want his or her loved ones to live rent/mortgage-free for life?

I don't feel sorry for these people. This is the risk you take when you choose to rent.

I have neighbors who have been renting the house next door (San Rafael neighborhood of Pasadena) for $1,300 over the past 20+ years. From what I understand, they make decent money, but the lure of cheap rent has trumped home ownership for them. If they had bought, they would have the house almost paid off by now. Pity.

Personally, I hate renting. We did it for a short period of time to scrounge together enough money for a down payment. Ugly bathrooms, inefficient kitchens and the inability to build equity were reasons enough for us to buy.

Just think how much the greedy Attorney is raking in on this, or should I say, these types of cases.
