How long with 200,000 last you? Depends on how bad your coke and hooker habit is...

I have a good job here in New York but don't really want to stay here forever.

I make $110,000 a year and about $80,000 after taxes. good thing about living here is that it is cheap. i spend 600/mo on rent and 600/mo on student loans. dont have any other major expenses. i figure i only really spend ~25k-30k a year. so if i save the extra 40k-50k a year in 4-5 years i should have around $200k in my savings.

If i went to LA first without a job just to get settled in first how long should i be okay for.

the thing is i do have a good job ( a doctorate degree) but it is pretty tough in socal because my field is pretty saturated. i lived in san diego before and was making a lot less, but id prefer to live in la.

So Im sure i could eventually find something in my field, but it might be lower paying or not exactly full time and it just might take some time to find. i would rather get there first and get settled in.

so, what do you guys think?
Deferring student loans, putting the $200,000 in the stock market or real estate, living with roommates, you keeping the same low cost live style, I see it easily lasting over 120 months.

Many people move to LA on far less than 20 grand, let alone 200.
