I wonder how many of the people who stood in line for an hour at Shake Shack did that just so they could tell their friends and family they went to Shake Shack....after all, it IS the cool, hip New York joint that's been getting so much buzz!....

All the people on the West coast comparing Shake Shack to In-n-Out burger are completely off the mark. Shake Shack is more like Chipotle style wise. The burger itself is a much more professionally cooked product with better ingredients (fresh chuck ground on site)

cause people must convince others shake shack is the best so they feel superiority over their taste of preference.

Price alone makes them incomparable.

...Chipotle is the McDonald's of TexMex. It's not like Shake Shack at all. Shake Shack's food is actually safe for human consumption.

The quality of food you are going to get at Shake Shack varies greatly based on the location and how crowded it is. I have found that the burgers they make at the Shake Shack in Philadelphia are better than any of the locations in New York City, mainly because there's only a few customers in the Philly location and there's insanely long lines at any of the NYC locations. I never had In-N-Out burger before. It's probably not as good as Shake Shack, but isn't In-N-Out more of the best of the "budget burger" places like McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's etc.? Shake Shack is extremely expensive for a small, albeit really delicious burger.

Comparing Shake Shack to Chipotle only helps the opinion that In-N-Out is better.

In-N-Out is not in the same league as Mickey D's, Burger King, and Wendy's, and never will be. Professional chefs eats at In-N-Out. Don't believe I can say the same for the others.

I might as well chime in about another de facto In and Out thread.

I'm looking forward to Shake Shack, but it does seem more like Five Guys or Umami. At those places after a a couple of burgers and fries I'm looking at a $30 bill. In and Out I can get for almost half that.

If you go on Yelp and look at the 2-3 star reviews for In and Out you'll see that they are all from east coasters. They are disappointed because In and Out is "over-hyped" and they are mad that they had to wait in line for 30 minutes just to eat it. And those are valid complaints; I mean, learn to temper your expectations but whatever. Though some reviews I've read say they couldn't tell the difference between a Double-Double and a Whopper and those people are sadly idiots.

Other issues are that people order the secret menu stuff first or order their burgers modified. I've only ordered TWO things in my entire life from the secret menu an that was a Grilled Cheese about 15 years ago for a friend and Animal Style fries about 7 years ago, which were disappointing.

A regular Double-Double with onions coming back home from a night in LA, a long trip, or after a high school football game on 1am on a Friday/Saturday night is something I've done many times over the past 20 years and that's just something that no other burger place could spark.

Again, that doesn't help the cause.
