Now that it's 2011, let's update it:
$8.00 in Calif [ minimum wage] so 8 x 40 hrs = 320 weekly
so monthly 320 x 4 = 1,280 month...
And since rent and fuel have quadrupled, haha, the answer is NO WAY!

I have not read every post here, but you are forgetting one very important thing. Minimum wage jobs have NO security. You can be fired on a whim, or if sales are down.

8 hrs/hour x 40 hrs/week x 50 weeks/year = $16,000 annual gross.

That's below the poverty line, no?
You're then qualified for Foodstamps, Medicare/Medical, and other social safety nets.

Except that rent and fuel have not quadrupled. OP said "tiny studio" in bad area, $600. Tiny studio in bad area is not now $2400.

What is gasoline now? $3.80? $4.00? So when this thread was started, it must have been under a dollar.

I know high school students who get more than min wage on their first job. Even my sister got more than min wage when she had that job back when she was 17 and still in school! I think a wage of less than $10 is really bad, especially in CA! I consider an "ok" wage to be at least $20 an hour!

Umm.. nooo. I used to make over six figures and I spent less than $200 a MONTH on food, usually it would be like $180. I'm female though and very petite but your appetite is not normal. I live like a QUEEN on less than $200 a month shopping mainly at Trader Joe's. Breakfast for me is one egg with a slice of bread (no room for fruit after that), chicken salad for lunch (3 oz of chicken with some greens), dinner some rice with veggies and a bit of meat etc. 100 a week on food is insane! Really insane. I would be a fat ass if I ate that much.

To be honest, I spent on average $150-$180 a month on food and most of it would go to waste and rot because I couldn't even finish it all.

Well if you qualify for section 8 and food stamps, that takes away a lot of your expenses.

It depends on how many roommates you have and whatnot. Minimum wage might be where you start, but it's not where you stay.

Depends on one's definition of "live".

Is it possible to maintain one's existence as a breathing carbon based lifeform in LA on minimum wage - yes.

Is it possible to achieve fulfillment in life in LA on minimum wage - Depends on the person, as its a subjective thing; but I know I sure as heck couldn't.
