When i moved to seattle 3 years ago my rent on my 1 bedroom apartment was $1200 per month. Now my rent is $1325 per month.

LA is too spread out and distances are too far apart for me. In seattle its easier to go to concerts, sporting events and see friends.

When i lived in Encino,California it was a pain to see my friend in Pasadena. From encino it was a pain to get to staples center or dodger staduim. Also the pantages and music center were hard to get to.

From my Seattle apartment i take one 30 minute bus ride to get to a mariners game. To go to key arena,5th avenue theater or the paramount theater in seattle its a short bus ride away from my apartment.

A guy I know has a rental multiplex in Seattle near Fremont / Lake Union. Old house remodeled into small 400 and 600 square foot units. He gets $1800 and $2000 a month for them. Never vacant. Raising rents every year. They’re nice ... near park (with mix of homeless) and eateries/bars ... but not luxury. No view. Street parking only. Crowded. Horrible traffic.

LA sucks. Seattle’s working on it. Fast.

South lake union is one of the more expensive areas in Seattle.

Yes. It is. But I specified “near Fremont”, which is north Lake Union. (North Queen Anne near Fremont Bridge, to be more precise). The cancer is spreading rapidly. ... and more expensively.

I gave Seattle a try for about a year early in my career but the winter cloudiness really took a toll on my mood/happiness. What's more, the area's naturally heavy traffic prevented me from easily escaping the city on the weekends, and that made my situation even more miserable. I felt like I was trapped.

If the weather up there from about October to May doesn't phase you, then I'd say you're golden. You are probably a good fit for Seattle.

The rain doesn't bother me much.

Is their rainy season anything like New England's?

I don't know why this thread was resurrected, but Seattle is just as expensive, and has traffic problems like LA. Seattle has more epic scenery, but also doesn't have 300+ days of sunshine. I would say that the tech job market is even more competitive in Seattle because it's more its probably the 2nd most sought after region other than SF Bay area.

Yeah, the cost of living in Seattle has increased dramatically in the past few years. I wouldn't be surprised if it passed SoCal soon. The reality is that average incomes are higher in Seattle than SoCal.

I think the new cost of living safe haven on the west coast is Portland.
