Hi! I'm going to be a senior this year. I live in NJ, so I'm used to "high rents". The schools I'm considering are CSULA (top choice), & LA City (last choice). I'll have a car when I attend, so I don't need to be extremely close.

I live in a low-income, mostly Hispanic city in northeastern NJ, so an area like this would be fine. I'd be fine in a rented room, or a studio apartment. I don't need a "nice" area, I just don't want to be somewhere where a college student would be vulnerable.

Can anyone recommend safe, cheap areas near these schools?

Nearby Alhambra is mainly Asian, pretty calm.
BTW, do you know about having to pay out-of-state tuition? Expensive. You need a 1-year confirmed residency to get the cheaper tuition:
California Residency FAQs - Admissions & Costs - CSU Channel Islands (different school, same requirements)

I've been hearing about Alhambra, thanks!
My family is low-income, so it's only be about 14K w/o R&B.
Everyone has been telling me it's impossible to get in-state during college. I want to live in LA for life, so I hope that's not true!

Cheap. Safe. Convenient.

Choose any two.

But all three?

Ain't happening. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

How far would inconvenient, cheap, safe neighborhoods be? I'd have a car. But this is why I'm wondering if I should live on-campus.

Baffled as to moving to LA to attend a low end cc or a low end cal state.

You have to live in state for a year to get in state tuition.

Stay with your parents until you finish college, do 2 years of work, then come out to Californis if you like.

The tuitions in NJ are much more than my CA net prices. In NJ, most are 25-30K+. Montclair is okay, and cheap (it's my first choice in-state). My parent may move with me, and I know it can take more than a year for residency.

I'm considering staying in-state, but it'll be at Montclair, not my terrible CC. The net price is the same as CSULA's, so I might as well attend my dream school.
