So, what's the deal with red light cameras? Are we still required to pay the ticket if we get a flash in our eyes while going through a yellow light?

There is a lot of conflicting info online about what cities you have to pay and what cities aren't enforcing these anymore.

Apparently the photos are taken by a contracting company and they just give the city a commission if the motorist pays?

Anyways, if anyone has any updated information, I'd appreciate it.

If you remember the TV show BJ and the Bear one of the rotating police which chased BJ was the militarized force which had everything first. It is said that Commander Cain's force was inspired by the Culver City PD. I have heard that some judges will throw out camera tickets but the State and Culver City are still going after your money. Even if an Arizona contractor gets most of the money.

I believe some cities like Culver, Cerritos etc still enforce the camera tickets.

Culver City definitely still enforces red light camera tickets.

This is wrong. There is no Culver City court. All tickets go through the LA County court system. As long as you never acknowledged the fact you received the ticket, you don't have to pay.

There is no consequences if you don't pay these tickets. According to the court and city officials: "The court does not report the violations to the state DMV. It is not attached to a person’s driving record and does not pop up when a driver is renewing a license or car registration.

Registered drivers would receive the violations in the mail. But the courts said that was not proof the driver violated the law, only the car. That led to the nonreporting of the red-light camera violations by the courts.

Often, judges would reduce the fines or dismiss them, if the picture of the driver on the video was blurry. Since the fines are split by the state, the county and the city, residuals dropped below the cost of the program, said Norman Baculinao, traffic engineer manager with the city of Pasadena.

“Literally, the voluntary payment became the norm,” he said. “The judge exercised a lot of discretion. Sometimes the judge would give them community service and then no revenue would go to the city.”
