I need to do some work in El Segundo (around E. Maple). Should I just stay in one of the Airport hotels or is there a suburb nearby that would be more appealing?

If you have a car, downtown Manhattan Beach is nice. Lots of restaurants, a little bit of shopping and of course, the beach.

Thanks, I'll probably grab a car. How's the Redondo Beach Area?

Within a mile or two of the water and within 5 miles of El Segundo are all nice areas and a short drive away; this includes Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and part of Redondo Beach. Like Downtown Manhattan Beach, Downtown Hermosa and Riviera Village in Redondo are pretty walkable with lots of places to eat and hang out.

There's an Embassy Suites in El Segundo right next to the airport.
