What are some jobs and ways of making money in LA for people who are good at drawing and art? There must be myriads ways to do so because the presence of Hollywood, tourism, and the large creative scene in general... what are some of them?

Is Los Angeles the place for artists to make a bigger splash? | Art and design | The Guardian

People who are good at drawing are a dime a dozen on LA. If yoou plan to try and make a living at it you'd better have a good day job perhaps as a commercial artist or graphic designer or a museum job. Then build a portfolio of your work, enter contests, get your work shown in galeries and even via a website.

Being good at drawing in and of itself isn't really an in-demand job skill. You'll be hard pressed to find a paying, full time job "drawing" unless you're drawing caricatures for tourists on the sidewalk.

However, if you have graphic design and computer skills, and a portfolio of work, there are employers looking for graphic designers who can design websites, brochures, ads, etc. There are also employers looking to hire people with graphic design and computer skills in the film, animation, and game design industries. Some of the people working in these sorts of jobs use drawing skills as part of their job, but landing these sorts of jobs requires more than just being good at drawing and art -- you have to be proficient with the types of software used in graphic design, film, animation and game design and have a portfolio of work to show, even at the entry level.

There are, of course, many other types of careers for creative people: interior design, architecture, marketing/advertising, museum curator, art gallery exhibition designer, industrial designer, art therapist, art teacher, illustrator, medical illustrator, technical illustrator, etc. But you'll need training and education to work in these fields as well in addition to a creative bent.

Hope this helps!

Take it from me, art this day and age just isn't a good career option unless you get extremely lucky.

Even the jobs mentioned in the post above me are hard to come by. Like Architecture before the housing crash and the ease of AutoCAD. Graphic design was the same way until it became an over saturated field.

There's animation, but that can be hard getting into.

I would not find doing graphic design very fulfilling. It really is not a very creative field. I was just wondering if there were any super unique oppurtunities for people talent in visual art. That doesn't seem to be the case. Well, thank you!

You basically have to be a CalArts grad. They have a nearly exclusive pipeline into the major studios
