I happened to come across this while searching for ridership stats for another city.

https://www.metro.net/news/ridership-statistics/

What's going on?

Cheap gas prices? Just like how people are now buying SUVs and trucks in huge numbers over the smaller, fuel efficient cars that they were buying last year. People aren't that bright.

Interesting to see which lines are up and which are down. Expo and Gold are up. Blue & Red are way down.

Gas prices and a better economy/increased discretionary spending are probably the main factors.

Red/Purple Line and Blue Line riders are likely the ones who have started driving more due to lower gas prices and better economy (maybe driving to their new jobs too?).

Gold Line and Expo Line are still being "discovered" by new riders and commuters, so their ridership numbers keep increasing slowly.

Plus, all the Foothill Extension and Expo2 news have given the original lines more exposure.

I like looking at the Current trends in Metro Systemwide.. link. It shows the a bar graph of ridership each month over 2 years. https://d1akjheu06qp1r.cloudfront.ne...hip_graphs.pdf

I thing we discussed about this subject in the past or maybe another site. There are many theories.
Gas prices are a big reason I think. Metro had a huge ridership peak when gas was $5. Remember those times. Now it is half that.

What I thought was gentrification and cost of living has pushed lower income and transit dependent people out into cheaper and affordable places outside of Metro's ridership area like Palmdale, Gateway cities, San Bernardino and Riverside counties. or even out of state. The bus ridership in those other places/agencies may have increased while Metro decreased. Those who can afford the higher rents/real estate may not need to ride public transit as much or at all.

Not even close.

I use door to door measurement. When I lived in Van Nuys if I left home for downtown LA at 630, it took about 45 minutes to get I my car, park, and walk in the door at work. At 8am, it was usually around an hour.

On the Redline at either time, it was almost always an hour and 5 minutes. Considering gas and wear and tear, the Redline was a winner the later in the morning I left.
