But the valleys should still enjoy highs in the 80s and full sunshine (but nights will be much cooler than last two summers even there) though.
Summer of 2009 was nice (in Socal at least) and January 2011 was warmer than July 2010. That's how bad it was

Not unusual for us to get random warmer winter days than our average summer highs at the coast but an entire month is really something. I think the entire year of 2016 will be below normal here overall; no record setting cold snaps but every month will have a below average high.

There used to be another L.A weather pseudo weather geek on here who tried to portray (both in the California forums and weather forums) our climate as one giant year round inferno (many of the posts were quite comical) but he disappeared along with our above average temperatures.

Summer 2011 was god awful.

Try to remember, though, that La Nina doesn't always equate to chilly summer temps in SoCal, and El Nino doesn't necessarily equate to warm summers every time either. Looking at daily temperature records for LA shows that the majority of August 2006 (Weak El Nino), was anomalously cold. These are all time MINIMUM HIGH temperature records by day.

Aug 1.....67 (2006)
Aug 2.....69 (2006)
Aug 3.....66 (2006)
Aug 4.....71 (2006)
Aug 5.....69 (2006)
Aug 6.....65 (2006)
Aug 13...69 (2006)
Aug 14...67 (2006)
Aug 15...66 (2006)
Aug 16...67 (2006)

September 4th, 1988, which was a very strong La Nina, also set the monthly record for max high AND max low temp in LA. (High of 110/Low of 80). Not super humid, but definitely enough to keep the low that high, so SST's off of our coast may not have dropped too much below normal.

Stronger La Nina's may have a higher correlation to below average temps here, but just because we have a mega El Nino right now doesn't mean we will have the exact opposite (Strong La Nina) next year. 82/83 was followed by a weak El Nino and 97/98 was followed by a moderate one.

What would be absolutely amazing is if we had a repeat of the 1950's where the period from 1951-1954 was a constant weak El Nino, followed by a weak La Nina in 54/55, then a neutral year followed by a strong El Nino in 57/58, which hung around as a weak El Nino the following year!

Definitely DONT like this cold streak weve been having out here. Spent 30+ years back East & absolutely hate the cold. Doesnt bother me in the least when were in the 80s/90s. love love love the warmth. I remember spending a few hours, Xmas day on Malibu Beach in 2013 & it was near 90 degrees.

I think we might not have any winter heat waves this year; most January through March days will be in the 50s and 60s with a few 70s thrown in here and there (some days rainy, some days sunny or party cloudy and cool). We do need the rain but our climate requires us to sacrifice winter warmth to get it (because we just CAN'T get above average rainfall paired with above normal temperatures in winter or spring). Last summer was a total fluke with the record setting heat paired with record setting rain in July and September in Southern California.

I think we won't see 90 degrees again until May (and then it will be in our inland locations).
