Hey guys, I just moved to Laurel Canyon and am wondering what is the best security system to get?

What is most cost efficient and actually effective? The previous owner had ADT installed but I've heard a lot of negative things about ADT and when I first moved in, the service was still in place and I set off the alarm and couldn't figure out for a good 10 minutes how to turn it off and no one even showed up to check on the property, so if I was a burglar, I could've gotten away with whatever I wanted.

Do most of you guys pay a monthly monitoring fee to a security company or do you just have video cameras to monitor yourself?

One person in our household works from home so I really am only worried about the house when we go on trips.

BTW-- it also seems like everytime I ask for a quote for most services (electrical/gardening,etc) On the phone, I get a reasonable quote and as soon as the installer/servicer gets to my home they suddenly hike up their rates, drives me nuts. Any advice on how to deal with that as a first time home buyer?

Thanks! Appreciate your advice on this matter and anything else about living in Laurel Canyon!

Anyone out there in Laurel Canyon or anywhere else in LA that can recommend video cam system over monthly monitoring or vice versa?

my father in law just showed me some cameras he bought off the internet for $30 or $40 bucks a piece that stream to the cloud for real time view if that interests you. i guess they are made by some generic chinese company. if are looking into more established companies, you may check out the Ring app, which comes with a doorbell camera. i think you have to pay $200 for the hardware plus a monthly fee for your videos to be saved to the cloud. I'd go with the chinese company if it were me.
