My default is Google Maps. I've used it in Michigan for years and I can usually calculate a commute of anywhere up to a couple hours within an accuracy of a couple minutes. The heavier the traffic, the less accurate it is, but it still gives me a very good idea of how long it'll take to get somewhere.

What's the best traffic app to use in the LA area? For example, at 3:40pm PST it's showing that it'll take 63 min from Newport Beach to Hermosa Beach (54 min without traffic), and 43 min (37 without traffic) from Walnut to Irvine. Are these times accurate? If not, how far off are they? I'm debating a move back to the area in a couple months which will be involving going to see potential clients in their homes for work, and I'm trying to get an idea of commute times to different areas at different times of the day. Thanks!

Easier to listen to KNX Newsradio AM 1070, they give a report every 8 minutes, they have helicopters in the air, and the traffic reporters know the best workarounds for jams.

Those are accurate, but it is the holidays still and traffic is a little lighter. Driving with traffic on the freeway is about 20-25 MPH, against traffic is 65 MPH or 1 mile a minute.

Hermosa beach is at least 15 minutes just to the freeway.

All traffic apps generally overestimate my commute by about 10% for whatever reason. I almost always get home/work in less time than anticipated.

I use Waze, only problem is sometimes when you get to an intersection, and it tells you to cross over to get to the other side of a busy thoroughfare, can get a little hairy.

Because it's user updated, the construction on roads, hazards, cops and accidents are populated as they occur.
