I have been looking at transferring schools and one of the schools I was looking at was in Sylmar (Los Angeles Mission College). I read on a few threads that Northeast SFV is, "less desirable," and was wondering if Sylmar was a decent place to live. If not I will consider other options...

And when I say safe I don't mean leave it to beaver no crime ever G rated family time, I mean am I going to have to worry when I leave my apartment/house. I'd assume like with most places, it has its good and bad neighborhoods. If someone could post a little information it would be greatly appreciated...

It's not dangerous. It's not Newport Beach either.

What are your other options and/or constraings? Living where? commuting? friends students there already? consider going straight to a four year instead? Job where? got a car?

Other options in the Valley/Ventura County: Pierce College, Valley College, Moorpark College (excellent), Oxnard college

Sylmar, San Fernando and Reseda are all desolate, majority low income Hispanic hell holes on the fringes of suburbia.

My dad got some work done on his airport there, and on the way there we would get nasty stares from gangbangers posted in front of housing projects.

It looks like TJ, giant used car lots, Spanish only grocery stores, abandoned railroads, it's pretty gritty.

A 2 year is my current goal, mainly to get gen ed. courses out of the way at a lower price (20$ a credit? sign me up), boost my GPA, and then moving on to a 4 year. 4 year colleges I have considered were UC Irvine, UCLA and CSU Fullerton. My other main concern is accreditation at the community colleges and making sure I'll be able to move all my credits to a 4 year school.

I have a few colleges in the greater LA area (I guess you would call it?) such as Santiago Canyon college in Orange, Fullerton College, El camino in Torrance, and a few others in Orange County. I figured I would start away from LA and orange county because it would be a little less expensive to live. I'd ask about orange county but I should save that for the appropriate forum, no?

I am planning on a trip to the area at the end of the month and I am going to try to get to all of the colleges I have contacted, as well as jobseek ahead of time AND while I am there. People that I do know however are in torrance and orange county.

My jobskills are CNC Machining... Do you know what the job market is like around there? I've looked through websites like Monster and etc. and I see alot of staffing agency postings trying to get people for machining positions, but those are just staffing agencies. I've started there but I'd prefer to find a shop on my own. My experience is limited (only 2 years) however.

Sylmar is okay. If you are hispanic you will do fine. If you are white or something, you will get looks as if you are evil and out to deport them all, they will play stupid if you need help and pretend they don't know English(which is probably true for many over 35years) and you can't expect the area to look nice(clean cars, clean yards etc).

I go to Mission and love it. Its real small, and real good IMO.
If you are an out of state resident, you wont get the $20 for at least one year.

I am white. Sounds like sylmar is out then? And I am aware of the residency thing. Still cheaper than it is here as a resident, lol. I am just trying to pick areas close to school and LA Mission is in sylmar (correct?) so I figured I would start there, but I'll get a definate answer when I make a visit.

Sylmar is Dirty, but people are not racist. If you're white and they look at you funny it's because they rarely see someone white in their neighborhood so they automatically think something is wrong (immigration, irs, detective etc.) Latinos are the least racist people.

Sylmar is a dump, but it's not really a bad area.

my ex-girlfriends parents were racist against me......they said all white people were racist and I found out it was true amongst the community, as far as the mexicans who were not born/raised here.....now she has a low life gang banging lookin mexican...who is probably approved. thank goodness for me

Anyway...dont get me wrong donut.....you can shop at places for food that will have americanized hispanics, but all the smaller shops that are privately owned are all in spanish and such. You will most likely spend your time outside of Sylmar, and with a 10-30min drive, you can be in a nicer shopping area or places to view movies etc....youd just basically live in the part of town most people dislike.
I'd be much more likely to carry a gun in Sylmar..........san fernando/pacoima...than I would in other areas. But you get what you pay for.
