Can I avoid paying $847 for Fix-It Ticket? (2015, school)

Hello,

I was originally issued a 25$ fix it ticket for driving with expired registration on my car. However I forgot to send in correction by the December 2015 date and received the yellow notice in the mail from the LA Superior court saying the bail amount is now $847.00, and a hold is placed on my license. It says if I pay within 20 days of the action date the civil assessment of $300.00 will be dropped from the bail amount bringing it to 547. But it also says I can request a court date, but that there's no guarantee the civil assessment will still be waived. I began to request a court date online but the first avail date is in April 2016, well past the 20 day period after the "Action Date" of 1/19/2016. My question is if I schedule a court date for April will that count as responding to the notice by the "Action Date" and stop my license from ultimately being suspended? Also how likely is it that I will have my fine reduced by a judge for a 24yo male college student who works fulltime as a server to pay for school? Any info is greatly appreciated as I am a bit confused.

It should, but to make sure call the traffic division of the court and ask them to be sure. If not, then just find out when the walk in calendar is and show up on that day. If your driving record is otherwise pretty good I would expect that they will reduce it.
