Huge increase in violent crime and killings . We know that LAPD had been fudging the numbers though while going on camera and saying " it's great crime is the lowest in decades !!"
Not with regards to homicides, but with regards to some other crimes.
Likewise LASD was fudging numbers to make crime look like it was higher (a practice far more common among law enforcement agencies.)
In general homicide statistics are the most reliable indicators of crime levels across the board. The rise in homicides reflects that the overall level of crime is higher.

Ever since a cop told me personally that while the violent crime numbers are down LA hasn't changed that drastically; I've never put much stock into the whole LA is so safe kinda talk. It's not South Side Chicago or Memphis but it's still no cakewalk. I wouldn't jog out in pacoima at night.

A cop is more biased than an average citizen when it comes to crime. Facts are, it's way safer than when I grew up in the 90's. You said it's not south side Chicago but it was south side Chicago in the 90's. i grew up in mid city which was way worse. I just glad we're not back to then.

That is right. Los Angeles circa the 80's and early 90's was way worse than Chicago is now. Only have the figures for both cities overall...

Los Angeles (city overall) in 1990 had a homicide rate of 28.9 per 100,000 residents (and 1980, 1991 and 1992 were actually worse years for murders). Los Angeles in 2013 had 6.3 murders per 100,000 residents.

By contrast, Chicago in 2014 had a homicide rate of 15.1 per 100,000 residents.

7 homicides (the change) represents .0004% of the population.

Meanwhile, 200+ people die every year from collisions.

Let's remember to put things in perspective.
True but collisions are generally accidents and homicides generally are not.
