You can't put a price on .... The smell of homeless pee in the morning!

Plenty of people live in Santa Monica right by the beach and pay zero rent, because in Santa Monica the homeless are King !

Being homeless does not make one a king. It's pathetic that in this country of plenty and huge affluence, people are sleeping on the beach and streets...many many homeless make their way here so they don't freeze..guess they still have a will to stay alive.

Then there is the vet homeless mess. Shame on the U.S.

Agree, it is nothing to laugh at.

Many people in this country are a couple of paychecks away from the street.

Just my two cents- expand your geographical horizons a little bit. I think if you're in fair health, as far as 16th-18th st. st could still be considered a reasonable walk to the beach. I used to live on Lincoln itself, could jog to the ocean ave. and back in about 10 minutes. Having been a few blocks further away would not have been much different, imo

I found a place in Ocean Park for a little bit north of $2K. It's not luxury, but it has everything I need, and is spacious. But I had to visit like 10-15 different places before I went with this one. I can't throw down the absurd amounts of money for the totally renovated or new places that have at least 600 sq. ft. I think I'll be happy with the one I have now, and I'm still at least contributing max to my 401K savings and still have some spending money for the weekends.

The first rule of west side living is the dream-vs-reality check everybody experiences. I remember a super nice renovated 1BR in Ocean Park that was going for ~$1850 3 years ago when I moved here. It wasn't ready until like 6 weeks after my move date so I had to pass on it. It would probably go for $2200+ today.

There are some older sh!th0le apts around Santa Monica college. My cousin moved into one last year because like you he loves the beach. He's actually not that close, but he rides a bike and gets there pretty easily.

His rent is $1700 a month. His neighbors are "interesting." And getting the landlord to fix things is challenging -- last time I visited him, he had no running water in the kitchen. Fortunately for him he's pretty relaxed about those things.

Must be one of those 'eco friendly' apartments

For $1,700 in Santa Monica though...I guess he's lucky at least to have a kitchen

Just change your definition of absurd, before moving here, how would you have classified $2000+ in rent for a 700 foot apartment?
