I am 28 going on 30, still living at home, do not work and do not drive. BUT I do own a driver's license just can't drive because parents do not want to put me on their insurance, because its too expensive. Anyway, I know how to use public transit, buses, subway trains, but have never ridden a taxi, or used the driving service Lyft and Uber.

I am from the Glendale/Burbank area and a lot of the events I like to go too are within the Sliverlake, Hollywood areas, how much would it cost going from my area to those areas, using one of these services?

And me being a female, what are the chances of getting mugged, robbed, or raped? Because a lot of people have been having incidents using these services, and I am worried.

I think you need to untie the apron strings and get some idea of what it's really like out here; sooner or later, you'll probably have no choice but to do so.

Not to be indelicate, but developmentally disabled people are more likely to be victims of crime. It would probably be best to go with a more streetwise friend.

Uber and Lyft have fare estimate tools on their websites.

You blame all your problems on your parents, you don't sound like a 28 year old.

Lyft and Uber have become expensive. Always surge pricing now. Maybe 6 months ago I would have recommended using it for daily transport.

Uber/Lyft will be the most convenient but more expensive of course than public transit.

The media loves to put fear into people. I mean there are so many Uber drivers out there of course some of them are going to be bad. Just like Police Officers, Teachers ,etc.

I mean it's terrible there was that Uber killer or whatever...but there are like over 160,000 THOUSAND Uber drivers in the U.S

To think that all of those people are going to be perfect law abiding citizens is unrealistic.

Also to answer your question with cost, on Uber when you put in your destination it gives you an estimated cost. Lyft last time I checked doesn't have this feature. I've heard that these services are about 20% or so cheaper than taxis..
As another poster mentioned if you are using it at certain popular times..like weekend nights the price can "Surge" and you will pay more. They tell you how much more beforehand though.

Lyft does have a Fare Estimate built into their app now. Just an FYI.

OP just download Uber & Lyft, pick the app without a crazy Surge Price (which seems to be stuck at 1.5x in LA now), and go for it. Last week Uber's Surge was 3.5x to go from DTLA to LAX. Normally a $28 fare was $100! Not too common though.
