In fact a commute from where you work(say that they lived in Pasadena) to Fairfax District would be awful unless you worked off hours.

The OP is single, they need to rethink home ownership if it means being too far out.
Thanks for your thoughts. I agree that Fairfax is way different than Pasadena in this commute. That being said this is my decision to make not yours. My work location could change in the future making Palmdale more reasonable. My goal is to buy a house at some point. I agree that Palmdale is a bit unrealistic at the moment but I'm not going to stop exploring different options/areas because you never know when I may take a new job much closer to somewhere affordable that I've looked into in the past.

It's a hell of a commute, but I had a co-worker do it to Hollywood. He was a well regarded senior software engineer though, and was allowed to work from home 2-3 days a week though.

I have a brother who lives in Palmdale and works in Van Nuys. It's not a horrible commute. My brother lives in West Palmdale (zip code 93551) and he lives in a great neighborhood with zero crime. The people bad-mouthing the High Desert cities of Lancaster and Palmdale are just going off of things they've heard about the area. Like all places, there are good and bad areas. You have to do research.

My brother's neighborhood is full of cops, fireman, nurses, teachers, retired military, aerospace workers, etc. Very, very safe and family-friendly.
