Has anyone here went to "Cal Poly San Louis Obispo" ?

If so, what can you tell me about the school ?

I know the University is well known for its engineering departments however what about its college of Business and their Economics program.

I would like to get an overall impression of a person who attended that school and perhaps can also talk about their business department (Orfalea College of Business) etc...

In Addition how would you compare "Cal Poly San Louis Obispo" to "Cal State Fullerton" - University to university and business department to business department etc...???

Thank You

What are your goals for getting a graduate degree in economics? Do you hope it will improve your job opportunities, or are you planning on going on to get a Phd in economics? If you see it as a career enhancer, what type of job/career do you see yourself pursuing after you get your degree? Where do you see yourself working? These are questions that will determine which masters program is the right one for YOU.

As I said in the other thread you started asking the same question, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has a fine business and economics program. (In fact, Business Week ranks the undergraduate program very well - see http://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/bu...e39441972.html) Cal State Fullerton also has a good business school. There are, however, very real differences between the two graduate programs in economics in how they are structured and how they might prepare a student for different goals.

So, as I also said in the other thread, for GRADUATE school, your decision really needs to depend on what your personal goals are for getting a master's in economics, and how the individual departments match those goals. The perfect program for someone else may not be the perfect program for YOU. If you haven't already done so (sounds like you haven't) go to their websites and dig down into the required and available coursework, the specializations available, and the opportunities available at each school. Then, call (or email if you are international) the graduate advisor in both economics departments to ask how specific questions about how the programs will help you meet your PERSONAL goals for getting a masters degree.

The opinions of strangers on the internet or even alumni will NOT answer which program is the best one for you and your goals.

Only you can answer that question, and the way to do that is to think about what your goals for pursuing a graduate degree are, then dig deep into the program information and contact the departments directly to ask any questions you have specific to your individual goals. A conversation with the graduate advisor will help you determine which program is the best match for your individual goals, and the graduate advisor may be able to put you in touch with other students who have similar goals to yours should you feel you need to talk to someone in the program.

I will also add that there are real differences in the locations of these two schools, and that might factor into your decision. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is located in a quintessential "college town" that many people love, but it is somewhat removed from a major city or airport. The surrounding area is very scenic, but may not be to the taste of those who are looking for urban excitement. Cal State Fullerton is located in Orange County, which is a densely populated suburban area, and much closer to Los Angeles (second largest city in the US) and major airports.

Location shouldn't be your deciding factor, of course, since you will only be in graduate school for a short time and getting an education that is the best match for your goals and interests is the primary consideration, but this may be a difference to consider should you absolutely feel that both graduate programs will get you to your goals. If you have never visited these two areas, this information may be helpful in this regard:

You may also want to do a search on Craigslist.com and Zillow.com to see rentals in both areas to get an idea of prices and what is available.

I totally understand this is a major and tough decision. These are both great schools overall, and a student can do well at either. However, there are enough differences between the programs that one is likely to be a little better match for your individual goals, interests and needs.

One thing is certain, however: the more people you ask for opinions, the more confused you will become about your decision. Ultimately, only person who can decide is YOU.

It may feel scary to choose one over the other (especially if you haven't been able to visit), but do your research on the differences in the masters in economics programs, call/email the department to ask more questions, and then go with your instincts and don't stress.

Regardless of which program you choose, you will make a GREAT decision.

Good luck with your research and decision.

School is highly ranked. City of San Luis Obispo is fantastic.

Best known for engineering, architecture and agriculture, but all programs are very good.

Why is this in the L.A. forum rather than the California forum?

Because the poster already asked in the California forum. The San Francisco forum as well. And the colleges and universities forum too.

Time for the poster to stop asking strangers for opinions and make a decision, me says.
