The average customer is smarter then the average minimum wage worker and once people realize their transactions go much smoother and they have less hassles dealing with a computer the less they miss human cashiers
CVS Pharmacy had a push towards automation in NYC, but for whatever reason they ended up getting rid of a lot of their automated machines. I'm not sure why.

The stores that do use automated machines still end up having to hire security, and they do have to have cashiers on staff (less of them) to do things like process returns, void transactions, etc.

They're not going to double rents because they doubled the minimum wage. Most people, especially in LA will not be affected the the wage increase, since they're already earning over $15 an hour. If they start raising rent rates they're going to price those people out. I think most property managers are smart enough to realize that their entire base is not people earning minimum wage, it's actually people earning a mid-level wage.

aren't you smart

You don't think the lowest wage job paying over $30k a year for full time will drive rents up?
SF and NYC would like a word with you.

Yes they are. Every grocery store now has self check...at least all the ones I've been to in LA area.

And leakage is already programmed into the pricing structure.

It's a matter of time before there's even fewer in store employees. A $15 min wage will just accelerate the process

I said they are not going to DOUBLE the rents just because they DOUBLE the federal minimum wage. It will likely go up, yes, but it's not going to double.

20 years ago there weren't self checkouts, now every major grocery store has at least 6 of these or more. That's at least 5 less employees the store needs, it just takes 1 person to monitor the 6 self checkouts. Automation is removing the human factor in a lot of job environments.
