Ok...so I just landed a job in El Segundo/Manhattan Beach, but i'm new to the city and need to move out of my ex's apt. in N. Hollywood. Basically, I want to stay in the city (vs. El Segundo/Manhattan Beach) and I'm looking for a good, safe area where I can rent a studio for about $1000/mo...any ideas or recommendations of safe but fun areas for a single 28 year old female?

You really should try to get a place near your job. Besides, it probably won't get that much cheaper anywhere within an hour drive of there anyway. Meaning, to get something for $1000/month might mean an unacceptable commute. I'm no expert on the rents in every neighborhood there but on this CD forum you should get more fine tuned feedback which will probably confirm my post.

Try Santa Monica or Culver City. Going to El Segundo you'll be going against traffic, so the commute shouldn't be too bad. You can always take the streets so you be good. If you are concerned about living alone, do the roommate thing. For $1000 per month you can get a deal. Try http://losangeles.craigslist.org.

Your budget lands you in Culver City as the closest acceptable locale.

Once again, I'll stress - live where you work. I can't imagine commuting. I work 4 blocks away and walk the "commute" daily. The furthest I would consider would be 10 miles.

Normally I'd say the same thing but her budget dictates otherwise. I preach the same sermon you do.

If you really want to stay in the area, try the studio apts at the Oakwood apts in Toluca Hills.

Why don't we hear more about walking? I live in Michigan and I literrally fantasize about being able to walk to work when I move to L.A.

Because most things are too far away for people to consider walking.
