I have 3 recent funny stories about that. One night I was in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Demi Moore walked in. Nobody noticed her. She went out and came in again. Again, nobody noticed her. She left and entered a third time and I think a couple people saw her. She should have taken off her huge dark glasses. It's really dark in the lobby, I don't know how she could see. She looked good...I'd seen her 7 years before at the Bellagio in Vegas and she looked too thin. She looked healthy that night.

Second story: I was eating dinner out on the patio of a great little place in Franklin Village called Prizzis Priazza. I look up and Ryan Gosling was walking toward us. He looked every inch the movie star. He was strutting his stuff at prime dinner time past patio after patio of diners and drinkers. I said "hey look, it's Ryan Gosling" and he heard me and got a little grin. A good friend of mine had a Ryan Gosling encounter a couple of months ago that was different. She was in Home Depot and he saw she recognised him and he put the hood of his hoodie up and bolted. Maybe he wasn't in the mood that day.

I was in Hollywood at a cafe on Vine St. and Faye Dunaway walked in. She was skeletal and either totally manic or popping pills. She was wearing surgical gloves. She looked really, really awful. Silly me, I leaned over and whispered to my partner that she was there. That's all it took, she bolted out the door. No big, everyone who lives in the area has seen her. She lives behind the gay porn theater.

Hi, I will be living in Los Angeles area in a couple weeks, but have been there a few times to get my place to live. First time I was there we stayed in 'HOLLYWOOD" and let's just say the sparkle died. So I would agree that West Hollywood is much more 'LA Hollywood stereotype that people think of' But in reality it is not a safe area. I would recommend using this site to give you an idea of a safe area to live in. LA Life - Find Your Place in Los Angeles It tells the crime index of all neighborhoods in L.A. I saw a small number of celebrities while in L.A. And yes, most of people serving you at a restaurant are wantabe actors. Also, you should really buy a GPS. It is a Godsend, much easier to use that those huge map books of L.A. Just be careful if you set it to take a local route because it might take you through a dangerous area of L.A. People I came into contact with were nice for the most part. They were very helpful and friendly. Maybe because it's sunny a lot and they are in a good mood. haha.. GOod luck. I like L.A. even if traffic is crazy.

North Hollywood is ugly and if you speak Spanish it might work, otherwise it is another world. I looked at places in North Hollywood and it was gross. NOHO area of North Hollywood is a bit better, but the prices are much higher. If you are a single guy it might as not be a big deal where you live, but if you want to be in a nice area I would not go with the cheapest apt you can find because there are a lot of awful places out there. I know this because last week I was in L.A. and I looked at a couple dozen different apts. My apt cost $1500 for a two bedroom in Glendale. But Glendale is very safe and kinda expensive.

You will have major culture shock coming from Portland. If your looking for a more exciting scene I would go to another warm city besides LA. I lived in LA for 2 years (not by my choice). I never had a real relationship there, it's easy to have casual encounters. In fact, I had been laughed at sometimes by women if I didn't want to ( ) the first night. One of the first girls I met there made fun of me for holding her hand when we were walking on the beach (second date). If you like singles scenes like that, then you will fit in perfect.

I was told people are clique-ish before I moved to LA- and it's true. People are wary of taking on new friends often because- you never know who you'll get. LA is full of opportunists/takers. Two- it takes a lot of time to commute/move your car to hang out with people- so people often meet through friends.

In NYC- it's easy to meet people right on the street and the ease of getting around makes people more social.

LA- is a little more neighborhood oriented, and therefore a bit sectioned unfortunately.

You'll never know who you'll see in LA. Truely, any shape or size.

-Last fall I saw wee man from jackass on the santa monica promenade with his 5"7, 5"8 blonde girlfriend.

-I think I saw Alan Ruck (from Ferris Bueller) and Jose Canseco on the sm promenade about a week ago.

-Saw Bruce Vilanch last fall at LAX. The guy from hollywood squares. I think he has a habit of wearing funny t shirts, he definitely doesn't blend in.

One celeb I'd like to see in person is Mandy Moore. She seems pretty normal and down to earth (at least by young hollywood standards).

thats very much the hollywood industry type- not to be confused with real angelinos.

if you hang in hollywood and the strip you will meet fake people interested in thing; being seen.

otherwise i have never had problems meeting people and making friends in Downtown, Venice, SaMo, East LA, on the south side, in Los Feliz, Highland Park, atwater, echo, etc etc.

i was always able to chat up a couple folks wherever i went... and even make long lasting friendships.
