Pros:

-Year-round sunny, mild weather
-Dramatic ocean, mountain and valley vistas
-Endless outdoor recreational opportunities (e.g., hiking, mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, surfing, boating, etc.)
-Generally friendly, pleasant people, especially the natives and long-time residents
-A generally laid-back, creative culture
-Gorgeous, interesting architecture
-Extremely diverse, delicious cuisine options
-Lots of farmers markets with cheap, fresh produce
-A multitude of low-cost entertainment options
-Quite a few airports and freeways (basically, ways to get in and out)
-Tons of day and weekend trip options (e.g., Santa Barbara, Temecula, Palm Springs, Las Vegas, etc.)
-A gardener's paradise (you grow an extremely wide variety of flora here - just add water!)
-More conservative populace than you would expect, especially in Orange County and older areas of LA County (e.g., Lakewood, Bellflower, etc.).
-Mediterranean, Craftsman-style and a ton of other cool and downright gorgeous architectural styles represented here

I could go and on...

Cons:

-High income and sales taxes
-Poor air quality (although significantly improved from 30-40 years ago)
-Some areas stink from the air pollution and / or defecation of the homeless (e.g., Downtown, the port areas, etc.)
-A very high and, at times, quite aggressive homeless population
-Heavy traffic (but if you live here long enough, you'll figure out alternate / auxiliary routes around the worst bottlenecks)
-Lots of ghetto, unsafe areas in LA County at least (but since real estate is at such a premium in the Los Angeles Basin, ghetto areas aren't nearly as blighted / rundown-looking as those in the eastern half of the country)
-Too much diversity (lots of anti-white sentiment among immigrant groups, primarily Asians and Latinos; blacks are very friendly and pleasant here)
-Disconnect among a large cohort of the population about traditional / stereotypical American customs, mores and norms, since a vast majority of the population is 1st or 2nd gen.

Overall, LA / OC is hand-over-foot better than anywhere on the East Coast, IMHO. I live in Long Beach, but I grew up and have lived in several states on the East Coast.
