If we received bad news such as an election that did not go our way, we accepted it and moved on. This would not have even been considered trauma.

I am not sure how the youth of today is going to handle unfavorable situations. They understand diversity when it comes to appearance but they don't when it comes to thought. They better get used to it.
Everyone had a similar experience after 9/11, more than four decades years later. Back when the planes hit, I was in school. The principal promptly made an announcement and we funneled to the auditorium to watch news. No counselling. It was expected that your parents fill you in on the details and then you return as a functioning human for classes the following day.

This particular UCLA example is a bit extreme, but none-the-less, in the 15 years since 9/11 our ability to handle "trama" has severely deteriorated.

The world is changing, get over it. Ironic.

Safe spaces and counseling for events is the new normal, get over it.

Just because we had to cope a certain way years ago, doesn't mean that people and children have to go through the same coping mechanisms we did. That's just backwards.

Character should be created through living life, yes I agree. However to create a space for children to talk who may be scared through what they heard in the media, said by a certain candidate who said and implied deportations and breaking up families, true or not, isn't a bad thing.

In fact it's a good thing. A place where we could assuage their fears and tell them to work hard in the face of adversity, because their parents, who may have come from another country may not have the means, time or share the same values we do.

It's also a good thing because they are human and would otherwise be acting out in a place of learning. If any of you worked in education as a teacher or otherwise would understand the importance of addressing these issues before they became larger issues and disruptions on campus.

All the coping is needed because of the things their parents are telling them. I have co-workers who are talking about how they told their kids that an evil man is now our leader and no one is safe any longer.

Those parents don't live in LAUSD areas.

The ironic thing here is that Trump actually would give the kids who live in LAUSD areas more educational opportunities by expanding charters and maybe even introducing vouchers, while if Hillary had won kids living in LAUSD areas would have even fewer opportunities.

Of course they don't look at the facts.
I would be surprised if any of those teachers actually discussed what Trump has actually advocated, rather than what their unions have purpouted.
