I am a 23 yr old, single, straight male and I might be getting a job in Santa Monica. I am a graphic designer, artist, musician, and surfer/skater. What's Santa Monica living like? Good match for me?

I've heard Venice Beach is awesome also... but then I've also heard people say "stay away from there!!!" haha.

I'm coming down from the bay area.

Your profile seems to be right in line with the Santa Monica demographic. I think you'd fit in quite nicely. As for Venice . . . I view it like I do NY City. Nice place to visit for a few days, but I wouldn't want to live there. No offense intended Venetians.

Certainly there are parts of Venice that are best avoided but I reckon it is a better match for you than Santa Monica. Crudely: Venice is the Mission District 10 years ago. Santa Monica is the Mission District 10 years from now, when it will be entirely filled with Googlers and investment bankers. Go and check both out, and don't go to the Venice boardwalk on weekends. Why that is a tourist attraction I have no idea. (Move on, guys! Jimi Hendrix is dead!)

either place is a good choice. If you like the venice break, then go for something walking distance to the beach. In santa monica, it wont matter because you will need to drive to topanga or venice for the closest surf.

Living in downtown santa monica area will offer quite a few restaurants, bars, etc. venice as well. both good choices.

You could have the best of both worlds by living in the Ocean Park neighborhood of Santa Monica. This is where I live and it's close to the ocean, to the employment centers of Santa Monica, and also border Venice. Lots of bars and restaurants in the area as well, and you can get around by bicycle to just about anywhere you would need to get.

Venice is gritty. You will prefer Santa Monica.
