I lived in the Southbay City of Redondo Beach for 2 years back in the 80's when it was affordable. The Southbay's location, next to the Pacific Ocean, means they also have the best air quality in LA County. My absolute favorite cities in that area are Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula, but they are also three of the most expensive cities to live in, in LA County. But as I said before, for 1.2 mil you can find a nice home in Redondo Beach or Torrance, and you're still close to the Ocean. Having said that, if you want hiking trails and to be closer to nature, you're not going to find that in the Southbay.

If they currently live anywhere north of San Rafael, it wouldn't be as much of a shock. If the OP does not like inland, your South Bay suggestions are more likely to result in a better outcome. But of course, there is a price for everything.

Sorry for the delay. I currently rent in Sausalito (3-bedroom home ~5k/month).
