How about walkable areas of Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo? For areas to walk around during the weekend - shops/ restaruants/ movies / coffee houses / dry cleaners , etc?

anywhere withing a few blocks of the beach is very walkable in these cities. There's one main street that runs through all the cities that changes names a few times that is just inland from the beach. This street is very walkable and has all the amenities one living in these cities would need except for maybe a grocery store. I believe its starts out as Highland in El Porto, changes to Manhattan Ave, then changes again to Hermosa Ave. In Redondo it changes names as well, but I'm not as familiar with that are.

Thanks so much for the comments...

Could you also comment on the walkability of downtown Long Beach compared to downtown Manhattan Beach?

I moved to downtown, before living in Redondo Beach. I got rid of my car, take the subway, train, bus, and wouldn't want any other way!!!!!!!!
It takes me 20 minutes to enter the heart of hollywood, the Valley, Pasadena, downtown Long Beach. Sometimes I want to pinch myself, this is TOO DAMN GOOD to be true.
I see all those poor suckers on the freeways.
I truly am living in the Best of all possible worlds. In the most exciting city, At my fingertips!!!!

Sorry to say, but it's a silly question. You are dead meat in Los Angeles if you don't own and use a car. In theory you can exist here without one but you will be a social outcast and will likely be greatly handicapped without a car.

Only outcasts don't own cars here. For your own happiness please don't move here if you think you will be comfortable without a car. Perhaps you should try up north, SF or Seattle. You won't be happy in LA without a car, or you will be the first person ever to be happy here without a car, which is not likely.

I remember how I felt when I got my license and a car. My world suddenly expanded. I no longer needed to risk my life on a bike and arrive sweaty, bum rides off my mom, or take a slow bus with a bunch of toothless people. Not having a car would be like going back to being 15 again. Screw that.

To the OP, can you think outside of the box? If the answer is "yes" then you won't need a car in L.A. If your answer is "no, I think inside the box all the time and refuse to change" then see the quoted post here and follow that advice lock step.

Bum rides off your mom! Would she still let you?

How about a fast bus with a bunch of normal people? Come to think of it, I've never thought about studying the dental work of others on the bus. Maybe if I wasn't napping or reading a book I might notice these things.

It's possible to not *own* a car in LA but there will be times when one *will* need a car, and then one will have to rent or seek help from a friend who has a car. Not owning a car does not imply never having to use a car! I've lived in LA not even a year (without a car) and I don't see how anyone can claim to be perfectly content being completely car-less in LA or most other American cities for that matter.
