Irrelevant, times change. It's not 1955 anymore. The city needs homes far more than it needs an airport for rich people.

The people who want to live here. Private airplanes are unnecessary, houses aren't. LAX can pick up the slack. If you don't want to live in a big dense city than move yourself and your airplane to Palmdale.

Why not fill in the channels in Marina del Rey to make room for more housing ? Pleasure boats are unnecessary. I'm not a pilot, but a city needs facilities like private plane airports in order to serve the community. The fact that the airport was there FIRST merely strengthens the case for it remaining. This won't solve our housing availability/affordability problems at all. It will just mean an expansion of Sunset Park where the homes are already prohibitively expensive. I just appraised a 900 sq ft absolute POS bombed out shack in Sunset Park that sold for $ 1,375,000 and it was the lowest priced house around.

Or for that matter, include the canals in Venice. They are full of yukky pooping ducks.

Indeed. Furthermore, there are probably around 25,000 housing units in SM, but just ONE airport. Nevertheless, the other poster seems to believe that SM has a shortage of housing units, yet an airport surplus.

It was my understanding that the land was going to be used for a park, not housing.

It could be mixed use, like some developers planned in Santa Monica where the new mall sits and including the area to the south. I believe what was Meigs Fields is now a mixed use park.
