Why LA specifically with its crowds, traffic and the CA high taxes? Why not another more affordable metro area? Is it because of family?

I never understand when people with a normal middle class income who have no reason to live in LA choose to live in LA. Maybe 10-15 years ago but today's not a great time to move here unless you are wealthy

Combined income of 100k isn't going to go far is you need a place with a yard for your dogs and you need to shop at Whole Foods

Another interesting thing is there seems to be a lot of posters recently they say they work at home /remotely so it doesn't matter where they live .

I've been here 15 years and the best deals were 2009/2010. Before that the deals were 1996/1997. But even with that said, it's never been "cheap" here. All the unfunded liabilities are scary as far as future taxation goes.

Those are ones I am especially referring to. If I was making 100k and it didn't matter where I lived I would be in Idaho or something. Even San Diego is a better choice if you just need to be in a warm climate on the pacific but Texas, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina all have much more affordable oceanfront property and decent weather. You can can also get a nice place on the Oregon coast for much less then CA. I understand people who grew up here and have family and roots here but I'd rather live someplace where I can easily afford a nice home in a nice area and have a nice lifestyle while saving for retirement/rainy days as opposed to compromising with a small house in a bad area, condo/apartment in ok area and having very little left after expenses.

There are many options for places to live with a Whole Foods (and other "city" amenities) that aren't nearly as expensive as SoCal. What else to you want to get out of the move? As someone that moved from Champaign, IL to SFO I have some experience on the sticker/culture shock you will likely encounter.

What are all these people doing who have 100k incomes and can work from home? I have a hunch these people are usually bloggers with high aspirations. Very few jobs allow you to live anywhere in he country and work from home.

Whole Foods is based in Austin. Their flagship store there is pretty incredible. Austin also has much of what LA has to offer at a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the traffic

I would imagine IT. Most bloggers don't even make $100/month. There are a lot of IT jobs that can be done remote. The only downside is that they can also be done remote by someone in India who will work for $5/hr

Homes in West L.A were available for around the 300s in 1997. I remember posting about this once and people didn't believe me , but it's true. Hard to find something in West L.A around under about $1.2million or so now.

Unfunded liabilities are a real concern. Pension expenses have skyrocketed relatively recently.
Pension costs are now 20% of the general fund.
