I'd rather burn up brakes than a clutch. Much easier to get to.

I'd rather burn up both doing canyon runs in the Santa Monica and San Gabriel Mountains.

Do you burn up clutches and transmissions if you live in those steep-ass hills?
LOL my step brother had a Lancia (yuck) manual trans and that engine was loud (just the way he wanted it) in a lawnmowery kind of way up Mt. Olympus. Many years ago, I used to drive my manual mustang GT convertible up there and I remember that once you get up higher, it's easy as there are not too many stops all over. Down shift coming down, weeee.

We both know the answer to that question.

I can understand why LA folks would be some of the worst offenders, though. Manuals are losing popularity in general...especially in gridlocked city like LA.

I don't have problems in the Hills, but I do get a little tense when I get to the top of La Cienega at Sunset. Last week I was working in Echo Park where some of the streets go straight up and straight down (you have to see it to believe it) and I was glad I was in my automatic.

Stick shifts and hills are never a good match!

I avoid that intersection at all costs. Even my wife's automatic rolls back quite a bit!

All it takes is a little practice. When my Dad was in the Army in WW2 one of his jobs for a while was teaching soldiers, many of which had never driven anything before, how to handle heavy vehicles like a 2-1/2 ton truck. He had the technique down and taught all of us kids how to do it. I have a buddy who grew up in the UK and starting off on a hill with a manual gearbox was part of his driving test. Roll back too far and fail.

You want pucker factor? Try driving a heavy truck with a non-synchro gearbox on a long twisty downhill. If you can't get into that lower gear you will toast the brakes and then it gets real interesting.

as long as you don't drive diesel trucks, you should be fine with cars with stick
