How ironic. I live in Keller literally on the border of Southlake, Westlake and Keller. We are neighbors! We were originally looking at Southlake and Colleyville. Wife really wanted a colonial this time round and we found the perfect one in Keller to rennovate and update.

But I would say a suburb like Southlake/Colleyville/Keller in that it can be 30-45 min from downtown, have decent yards, homes with 3500-5500 sqft, custom build quality etc.

In your price range, you can get some nice 2-3 bedroom places with backyards that are actually in residential neighborhoods, a short walk from very urban and interesting parts of LA. Its a nice thing about the layout of the city.

There are a couple of areas I think you'd love:
Belmont Shores, Long Beach
Manhattan Beach/Hermosa beach/Redondo Beach
Venice/Mar Vista/Playa Vista
West LA
Fairfax/Carthay Circle
Hollywood Hills
Los Feliz
South Pasadena
