I lost my 17 year-old son to a car accident on Mother’s Day 2016. While I’m a practicing Catholic and love the ritual and tradition of my faith, I feel like something’s missing and I’m interested in a Bible Study class, ideally somewhere in the SGV. Does anyone have any recommendations?

My sincere condolences and prayers on the loss of your son.

As a practicing Catholic, I participate at Bible study at my local parish. Hopefully, a your parish or a parish near you offers the same.

Good thoughts to you.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have a 17 year old myself and cannot even imagine the pain and grief you must feel.

My carpool buddy in Pasadena went to bible studies through St. Elizabeth's on Lake Ave. in Pasadena. You could give them a call.

I am protestant and know of some churches in the area that offer protestant bible studies.

I'm very sorry about your loss. St. Philip the Apostle Catholic church in Pasadena has a multi-parish bible study group you can join https://usc.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8cb5V6eEua7dvaB

At the same church, Sr. Teresita is listed as the contact for their Bible Study ministry 626-793-0693 ext. 109 tkeliher@stphiliptheapostle.org

Also in Pasadena Assumption BVM is soon to begin a bible study group (page four) abvmpasadena.org/files/2017/05/05-14-2017-Bulletin-with-ads-1dl05cf.pdf

Lake Ave is a good church, but she specifically requested Catholic.

OP, I had a thought yesterday as I was driving by a church that had a sign saying, "Grief support group" that perhaps you could call around to different perishes and ask if they have anything like this, specifically targeted at those who have suffered a loss. A bible study/grief support group would be great.

Thank you all for your kind words and recommendations. I’m okay attending a Bible Study course at a non-Catholic church. The doctrine’s all the same, it’s just the dogma that’s different. I attended Catholic school for 16 years. In all that time, I don’t remember every studying the Bible. That’s not something that we Catholics do on a wholesale level, I think it’s left up to the individual. For me, I would probably get more out of it if someone were leading the discussion.

My 16 year-old son attends a teen grief group every Thursday. I attend weekly therapy and have gone back on anti-depressants (I got off of them, but I was a non-functioning mess), and my husband visits our son’s niche weekly. We’re doing what we can, but I think attending a Bible study class would fulfill a spiritual component that I’m missing.

I was little reluctant to pose this question on C-D, knowing that religion can be a controversial subject, but I was really at a loss as to where to look. You have all been very helpful and thoughtful. Thank you.

I recommend Bible Study Fellowship, which is an international Bible study. I notice there are two groups for women in Pasadena. They meet in two local churches there, but are not associated with a specific denomination. It's just a meeting place. www.bsfinternational.org (Sorry, I don't know how to create a link!)
