So therefore anyone who rents or owns in LA is rich.
$110K may seem rich to someone who decided to become a freelance writer like the author, but for a dual income household, that fairly middle-class. There's not many reasons why a single person NEEDS (not wants) a 2 bedroom, so your talking about two people making $55,000 year. That's a reasonable middle-class job, nothing fancy.

I'm amazed that illegals flock to Los Angeles of all places. How many people are they cramming in 2 bedroom houses? Like 20 people?

The sanctuary city status has a lot to do with it . Also easier for them to find employment in L.A versus the Midwest or somewhere where housing is cheaper .
Also of course some might have family that own their own places or might even own homes themselves or are on rent control etc so aren't paying market rates .

At market rates even in Panorama City or Pacoima it's going to be over $1600 for a 2bedroom . Of course considerably cheaper than more desirable parts of town but still not cheap .

Folks come on here to these forums, share of ton of their personal info, and cannot be shocked on how they get judged. It wont be all praise.
Not to mention many of them seem to have these huge current or expected incomes but curiously have taken 1 or zero trips out here, and have less than 5 post. If you think you can swing a 5 bedroom house, then surely should have the ability to take several trips to see the place. C'mon now

And last time most of us check, going "down" to a place, means heading south. I could not imagine myself saying "I'm going down to Canada"
Back East,
Down South,
Up North
Out West.

Pretty simple.

To play devils advocate downtown in a city is not down for everyone and uptown is not up for everyone.

Yeah rents have shot up. I know many young people who grew up in the LA area their whole life but can't afford to live here now that they are in adulthood and have moved either to the IE or another state. And some aren't coming back since they already started having kids, buying houses, in places like Colorado and Texas.

They tell me with what you could rent a two bedroom here, you can have a 4 bedroom house over there, and a car.

Yes and that is to own the 4 bedroom house not rent .
The thing about renting is that net worth of renters on average is much much lower than homeowners .

This doesn't mean all renters are poor or all homeowners have big networths but on average

45x greater net worth is huge .

That's 4500% greater .

Renting almost never seems to be a good long term housing solution .

You are correct. They own a house with what it cost to rent a one or two bedroom here.

There's a number of small buildings where illegals pay cash. This does't really make headlines or anything. I dated a guy years ago who owned a few small buildings in LA and Palm Desert where it was a cash only. Totally illegal and shady business.

You are implying that it is illegal to take cash for rent payments, and that is just not so.

Bob.
