Anybody else noticed the big increase in new barbershops in L.A?
Do you think it's sustainable ?
I know everyone needs to get their hair cut but are people getting their hair cut more?

Where did people get their haircut before these new shops opened up ?

They mostly seem to play on the old school barbershop but with a hipster edge .

Exactly. Hipsters are into the vintage style barbershops. They are also really into their beards and paying a professional that knows how to trim and shape them.

Yeah I was thinking it had a lot to do with beards . I had a beard for a while but decided to shave it off .
Maintaining a beard properly can get experience too .

Wonder if the beard trend/fad dies if a bunch of these shops will close up .

I suspect a portion of it is that men want to go to a place for men. When I was a kid, males went to barbershops. However, in the 90's, like a lot of males I started going to places such as Supercuts, as barbershops became more difficult to find and furthermore I got tired of old men cutting my hair who could not keep their hands particularly steady. I suspect there's a large clientele these days who, like me, miss having a men's place instead of the whole unisex/metrosexual experience at places such as Supercuts.

The ones I've been seeing cater to black dudes. They just opened one up near me a while back. The guys working there are old school looking and dress nicer than most people on tbe street, but again, it's catered to black guys.

The concept of men paying a lot of money for grooming is really hard for me to grasp. We do not need much at all. No wonder younger people never save anything when they have convinced men to spend tons of money on hair like women do!

I go to one of these vintage style men's barber shops for a hair cut and enjoy it. Particularly, Svelte Men on Franklin in Hollywood.

It's not a regular thing for me...maybe every 3 months? In between I keep up on the edges/neck and what not...but after a few months of that pass I realize I don't know what I'm doing and pay the $30 for a pro. Is it a luxury? Sure.

I do think they're sustainable for time being while that faded-side style is in trend, probably for a few more years.
