I got a job offer on Monday and accepted. The offer was given to me by the assistant principal who called me hours after I interviewed. He said he would call me on information on getting me processed. I had a follow up voicemail from him saying that he emailed HR to find out how to get me processed (I think he is a new AP). I've called him 2x leaving voicemails for any updates. I know the school year starts for students this Tuesday.

Is it normal for it to take this long to even find out what I need to do to get processed? I figure that they (district-wide) are doing a lot of last minute hires which is why I haven't gotten any response back. I'm also not in a teaching position so I'm probably going to be at the bottom of a processing list.

I'm just getting a bit worried. A few years ago I was offered a job with LAUSD but a few day after I accepted, I was sent a letter saying that I'm not qualified for the job despite meeting their qualifications. I inquired about where I was lacking and was told that they are not allowed to answer that...

That's my biggest fear. I don't mind starting later than planned but I just want to make sure thing are okay.

Oh gosh, the first time I got hired it took DAYS at 450 N. Grand.....yup, back in the N. Grand days.....and they were hiring over 2,000 people that year, almost all of us Emergency Credentials.

Are you sure you meet the qualifications now? If you are, then I think you are fine.

Yeah and I met the qualifications too which is why I was confused then. I asked them (when I applied a few years ago) if I could sub and they told me I wasn't qualified to do that even though I subbed with them a few years ago. I'm not sure if someone put something bad about me in my personnel file.

arrests, dui, bad credit report? If a company is doing a full background check then there are a lot of reasons they might rescind an offers beyond just qualifications and I would hope LAUSD does full background checks

Do you have a TB test from the past 12 months? If not, use your weekend to go do that.

Yes they move VERY slowly! I'm a fully credentialed teacher in a super high need area. I got a job right away and even had a school get angry that I got hired before they could interview me (they hadn't contacted me yet to even set up an interview, it was weird). Anyways, enough bragging about myself.

It took from mid-June (hire date) to late July, and that was with a well-connected principal who needed me to set up his special ed department. So don't be discouraged. It is a huge machine and it turns slowly.

I wouldn't waste time contacting the AP. You should have an HR specialist assigned to you. Be in contact with that person. If you don't know who that person is, then call HR and ask. Sometimes you just need to be assigned one and that maybe is still done by your last name? I'm not sure. But get that person and email/call with them. I love my HR lady and I emailed her many years after getting hired with whatever questions I had. She's super sweet and helpful.

That doesn't happen <wink, wink>

but seriously, if that happened, there's really no way for you to find out unless you have someone on the inside.

I had a principal a few years back who I had problems with. He has been employed in a non school position at the district office (don't know how long though). I cannot help but think that he was the reason why I didn't get that job last time. When I worked with him, I made the mistake of not getting an employment lawyer. He was smart though....he never put anything in writing so I never did anything due to looking like the "disgruntled employee".

That sucks, but one big thing in your favor is that this is a huge machine so angering one cog may not cause that much. He might not even know you are back in the system. I haven't made any enemies, but the district is huge. If you make one in one local district area then the other ones are usually still ok.

The only problem I have had is with one big math person who forgot to pay me for a two weekend workshop I attended and then ran out of money so I never got anything. I let it go, but when he tried to come do some work with my school I let my principal know what happened and why I wouldn't attend anything he did. The principal changed to a different math specialist and that was the end of that.

But think positively! I'm sure it will work out. It's just a slow system. I don't want to discourage you.
